What is a Field Trial?
Field Trials are an invaluable tradition that exemplifies the years of dedication to enhancing the quality of sporting dogs, as well as the people who breed, train, and compete them. Dating back to the mid 1800’s, they have provided enjoyment for competitors and spectators alike by allowing a display of passion for the outdoors, and animals. Those involved in the sport display the conservation characteristics of the quintessential sportsman, committed to preserving wildlife and their habitats, while pursuing of the perfect dog.
A typical horseback field trial (Shooting Dog or All-Age Standards) begins at the break away, where the handlers are notified by the judges to start the event. Each brace pairs two dogs to run a designated course simultaneously. When the dogs are released, time is started and the adventure is officially underway.
The handlers attempt to guide their dogs along the course, finding as many birds as possible along the way. As the event progresses, the dogs are judged on several attributes including range, class, style, handling response and ability to find birds.
During the competition, when a dog points, the judges verify the point and the handler (if on horseback, dismounts) walks toward the dog and flushes the bird or birds. When the game flies, the handler fires a blank into the air. During this exhilarating portion of the event, a broke or trained dog must demonstrate its maturity by standing intently in place until the handler removes it from the area. Then, it is on to the next covey.
The incredible competition in both amateur and professional (open) stakes as well as the great camaraderie by some of the best people on earth make Field-Trial competition fun for the entire family.
